In the modern era of expanding globalism, willingly or not we should use
English in everyday life: making researches and speeches in a specialized field, working
for a company, operating business; as a result, there is a growing movement to improve
skills of it by learning from an early age.
But I'm not myself convinced that children should take time to study English,
reducing the time to spend for other subjects: Japanese, arithmetic, science, history.
And that's not that in any way I want to dismiss the value of command of English; it's
not that I haven't recognized the importance of English as a tool for playing an active
role internationally. What I mean is whether it is a wise choice to spend their precious
time on low-level and stereotyped English conversations, such as, 'How are you?' 'I'm fine,
and you?' I think it is the most important for us to have children study Japanese harder
and foster their intellectual spirit, attitude and curiosity toward learning, for we as
native Japanese, can take most profound and sensitive action of thought when we use
Japanese language.
